What do you think about Diangana's prospects going forward? Dropped this week, more an experiment that a permanent thing? As my weakest midfielder, I'm looking at available players and wondering if I should try and swap him for available pickups Sander Berge or Solly March/Gross from Brighton. Overreaction?

Writing about Diangana today! Post on ranks coming out very very late tonight - GK get skipped and DEF drop. Then MID tomorrow and FWD Thursday.

That’s not an overreaction it’s about his value per start vs collective value for the season

Would you trade away havertz to get Richarlison?

For context I only have 3 strikers in my 10 team league (Timo, Lookman, Greenwood) and a decent midfield of Maddison, Barkley, Havertz , Under, Pogba (assuming he becomes decent at some point ...)

John Wallin's avatar

I would not but in that limited situation I would enjoy having the steady presence of Richarlison next to Werner. If you could package Pogba/Greenwood to a United supporter for someone like Harvey Barnes I’d do it.

Is it time to drop Wood in OFPL? I can pick up Rodrigo on waivers.

John Wallin's avatar

Chris "I've Got" Wood? Yeah the best time to drop him was right after you drafted him, but the second best time is now. I had him No. 20 (and behind Rodrigo) in the final summer ranks and he's steadily dropped since then. Now also behind Maupay (No. 21 in summer), Adams (25), and Bamford (28).

Would you trade bale for jota gaffer?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I would but I love Liverpool's newest talisman and I will always be concerned about a) injury and b) Jose with respect to Bale. They're very similar fantasy propositions (though for different reasons). AND I would want to try and extract more from the manager with Jota, which I think is possible and reasonable pointing out that Bale's track record and position for Spurs points to significantly more FPL value; Jota has more hurdles to reach Bale's level, in short.

Would you try to trade Zouma out for Chilwell, Digne, Andrew Robertson, James or some other high end FB?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

Yes. And if you flip Digne and Chilwell that's the correct order for me.

Safe to assume if the TAA owner is getting nervous I should see if Zouma (probably + small piece) will get a deal done? I realize TAA is much better, but it seems his owner has lost patience.

John Wallin's avatar

Offer it 1:1 with an invitation to discuss and see which way the wind is blowing.

Quick note: I almost *always* have a conversation (DM, email, text whatever) before I send an offer. You'll get a lot more deals done if there's open dialogue before the first advance.

Saul Goodman's avatar

Definitely try to start a dialogue so long as I've got some way to talk with them outside of the fantrax platform. Would TAA be above Digne for you in spite of his awful start?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

No, Digne is ahead of TAA for me right now but this is in tandem with my 1st Tier being expanded so I think there is an argument for TAA.

I had Digne No 1 DEF last year in the ranks and have been high on him at basically any/every point. He creates so much that it’s easy to see where his value is coming from. Trent is amazing but LFC’s troubles right now clearly impacting his role in the final 3rd. His shot creating actions is level with Matt Target.

Is Conor Townsend worth holding on to in a 12 team league? I've got A. Robinson, Zouma, Doherty, Coufal as my other defenders. FA pool is pretty bleak.

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I do not think Townsend is a high-end player but I do think that he has some value as coverage. That essentially makes him a streaming option. Remember a streaming option doesn't mean you automatically drop them every week, just that you're regularly evaluating that player against available Waiver options and making those moves when the match-up (or string of match-ups) makes sense for you to do that. In other words: no sacred cows in streaming. Sounds like he's the best option right now.

How would you rank the City fwds (Sterling, Mahrez, Jesus, Aguero) ROS? Would it be worth trying to build a trade for any of them around Havertz or James R.?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I think that is the right order for total points. I would contemplate trading Aguero *today* for Reece James because you're shedding all of the injury risk.

But I think that there is a decent argument it is Sterling, Aguero, Mahrez, Jesus for the Points Per Start. Because Sterling and Mahrez are substantially further ahead in my starts estimation I would never consider trading either for a DEF. I probably don't want to downgrade either to Havertz either. without know more of your league I can't say Aguero/Jesus for Havertz gets done, but if you're able to make that happen I would be happy to have Kai on my team coming out of the next break.

Q: I have mount aguero telles Adama all in my team . Too many non starters any trades you recommend I can’t seem to get sky interest

A: Ugh that's rough. No, I wouldn't trade any of them because you're not getting value. Mount should start this weekend at least (Pulisic and Kai out). Aguero could be back after the break as should Telles and Kai which means if you can be patient for two weeks you'll be in a great spot to make some trades that make sense for you (and your trade partner). Really hard to get people to bite when they think they're being taken advantage of and I would also want to wait - if I was the one getting the injured guy - until the last moments before the trade disappeared.

Q: what kind of midfielder is Callum Wilson’s trade equivalent? Eyes league is watching

A: MID2/3 depending on your league size. I’d trade him for someone in the Barkley/Trossard/Pereira range. The Thing™ about Callum Wilson is that

Wilson's Newcastle have 8.2 xG and 10 goals. He is currently averaging 0.81 xG/90' which is WILDLY unsustainable. For context, in his last three seasons his xG/90' are: 0.34 (8 goals), 0.50 (14g), 0.31 (8g). I haven't pulled out the non-penalty xG here because he is on penalties and they call count the same in FPL. I would almost always prefer to have one of those midfielders because each of them have good g/a upside but pick up points across the board making them more valuable week-over-week.

Hey gaffer always an entertaining read what to do with Dwight McNeil? Start him or wait till Burnley put together some solid games?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I think you're still starting him. What I've found most interesting anecdotally is that most teams with McNeil don't seem to *need* him to start for them. That's likely because those managers that drafted him are a) very smart attractive readers of this here blog and b) have a deep appreciation for the underlying stats that drive high FPL draft value and McNeil's in particular. He's 40th at MID this season and 6.21 PPM is obviously not good, but everywhere I own him I'm starting him today as a MID3.

that is an insane collection of talent for it NOT TO BE YOUR STARTERS

Posted this earlier on the Ings post from this week, but I forgot there would be a Friday open thread, so moving it here!

I've been offered Mitrovic for Townsend, and I could do with a forward as Firmino/Batshuayi aren't doing much for me (I can afford to lose Townsend from my midfield). I'm hesitating because of Fulham's next 5 matches (West Ham/Everton/Leicester/Man City/Liverpool). Is it worth going for the trade in the hope that Mitrovic is fixture-independent over this span? (Toggatrax scoring)

Thanks!

John Wallin's avatar

I would accept Townsend back. I was initially concerned he would be the one to make way for Eze. A) currently no one is making way for Eze but B) when someone does it will clearly be Jeff Schlupppp.

Since you're the one giving him, it's really about the value of Mitrovic and I can certainly understand your concern but it doesn't look like you'd be disadvantaged much. If you can afford to start someone off your bench instead of Townsend for a couple of those games this is a good add. Not to rehash old writing, but Mitrovic is capable of posting 6-8 points without a goal or assist which is great for a FWD3 and capable of owning penalties with a 10-14 goal target for the season which is outstanding for a FWD3. Fulham are trash so he's not a FWD2 in most leagues right now but still great value.

thanks very much, man! I'm going to be enjoying a couple pints of IPA and a couple pints of brown. Where I live we get a nice cross section of US states so I'll probably be starting with Allagash River Trip. Belgian "style" session ale that is a rerelease of their house beer but slightly hopforward. it's also only 4.8% ABV so it's a good day drinker.
