Hey Gaffer, 8 Team OFPL trade talk. Potential trade I’d send Son/Walker/Wood for TAA/JWP/Firmino. It’d leave me with Salah, Rodriguez, Bowen, JWP and Harrison at MF.

The question is, can you look at this trade without Firmino tinted glasses?

In an 8-team league I’d rather have the TAA/JWP side. I don’t think Walker OR Wood need to be owned in a league that size. Bobby has been pretty awful but assuming you roster 16 players per team he definitely still needs to be owned.

Firmino is 52nd in total points. Walker is 99th.

“Fun” stat: 2020-21 xG to date

Son: 3.9 xG, 10 goals

Wood: 3.7 xG, 2 goals

Firmino: 4.3xG 2 goals

It’s not the only stat that matters of course but what Son and Kane are doing can be be described as “playing like they typically do and getting a bit lucky with finishing”

I’m in official fantasy draft with 11 players and 3 bench. Walker has 39 and Firmino 37.. does this change anything? I’ve been following the XG and agree Son is overarching.

Gaffer last minute question, should I start Raphinha or Armstrong this weekend in fantrax draft scoring?

I’d be happy to start Raphinha but I’m all action. 💪 deffo safer path to 8pts if that’s your thing

I see your comments about Burnley and don't disagree, they've looked toothless.

I have had Chris Wood in my OFPL 10-man league since Draft Day and starting to wonder if now is the time to drop him. The most appealing alternatives on waivers are Welbeck and Giroud. What are your thoughts?

Advantage of Wood is he's nailed meaning I can guarantee at least a two pointer, whereas a large portion of my squad are rotation-risk high-ceiling players (DEF: Chilwell, Mendy, Laporte, Telles, Castagne; MID: Pulisic, Aubameyang, JWP, Adama Traore, Benrahma; FWD: Adams, Jesus, Wood).

Giroud's form is smelling a lot like last season where his performances meant Frank couldn't ignore him any more and Tammy had to take a back seat, plus he's got huge incentive to perform when he gets his chances to ensure that come the end of the season he's included in France's Euros squad. Welbeck likely to get more minutes and probably get a goal every third game. Giroud seems like the high-ceiling gambler's choice, whereas Welbeck is probably the safer option, but in that regard does he offer enough more than Wood?

I don’t see where Giroud’s minutes are meant to come from with everyone else healthy. I certainly understand how good he looked in that one game, but he’s always had exactly this same talent, he’s been healthy and Frank has played him 47’ across five (5!) matches.

Both of them are better players than Wood. This boils down to basic ROS ranks - which I JUST published - where I have Welbeck 12 spots ahead of Wood. I’m not moving off that unless Danny gets hurt.

OK, I'll pull the trigger on Danny. I'll keep Giroud on my watchlist, may be one to re-visit if Tammy gets injured.

Morning Wallin,

Are any Arsenal assets worth trading in or picking up? I don't see Arteta getting sacked unless things go very sour in the locker room.

Can't help but think they'll turn around..

Pulisic and Kai are "fit" now. Is it Frank Roulette or does he go with a Klopp style preferred XI for EPL games?

Why is Kane so damn good this year and how did I pass over him twice in draft without a second guess . 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

A is for Arsenal and also Abysmal, Abhorrent and Abstain! Arsenal was the Spotlight club on this week’s BangAverage pod which is deffo worth a listen. And no, there is not one player on that team I’m trading for unless I’m getting a serious discount. At least 20 places in the ranks discount.

I know Chelsea is “healthy” now but that’s only going to last a couple matches and nature will take it’s course. These players are being asked to do too much and if there isn’t rotation, well the trainers table comes for us all.

Passing over Kane TWICE? Fam. I’ve never been a fan of the skill set but even I had him in the top 10 players in the 200 and No 5 forward. When he’s healthy he scores 30 (30!) goals. The assists? Honestly I would be shocked if he plays until he’s 50 and never gets another one I wouldn’t be upset 😏

Hey John! How much would you rate the Hourihane - B.Traore handcuff over the next month while Barkley is out? (in 12 man togga)

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I don’t want the handcuff, I only want Hourihane and then just start him as a MID4 when he’s in the XI. I’ve been underwhelmed by Traore and wasn’t high on his signing to begin with.

It’s genuine not worth owning both of them because Traore hasn’t shown the same upside Hourihane has - we own handcuff (Aguero/Jesus) when owning both means we’re guaranteed a certain level of production (Trossard/Groß; Doherty/Aurier) but not just to own the back-up (TAA/Neco).

Great examples to help me understand. Thankyou. I hold Mahrez/Torres, I presume this fits the bill?

While I have you, a trade offer made to me: Rashford and Bale for my Mahrez and Bowen. I was going to reject this fairly fast, but, paused given how low you rank Bowen (I've been paying attention haha) and while I understand your reasoning for him, I was wondering if you could elaborate on how you have Bale so high in your mid-seasons ranks, are you expecting a large increase in his minutes?

Many thanks

Bale is just there on upside. It’s hard to judge exactly what’s wrong here - tactics, fitness, “commitment” that Jose wants to see 🤷🏼

I’d be happy to get back Rashford for Mahrez with the caveat that Mahrez remains the better per start value so if you have rotation coverage there’s nothing wrong with holding him. I do not rate Bowen at all. And as I’m typing this he’s in 8.5 points against Man Utd with 40 minutes remaining....

which is nearly the 9pts he scored against Tottenham City Liverpool and Fulham, combined. When he’s on, he’s fine - I just do not believe in his ability and am infuriated that Moyes rates him of obviously better players.

Hey Gaffer! Hope you are doing well, just wondering what value you would give up for Martial or Greenwood? Where is too much? Are the likes of ASM Antonio and JWP too much?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

So for Martial I wouldn’t trade anyone above Cairney (No 32) in the midfielder ranks and for Greenwood it’s a little lower than that...probably would not trade anyone above Ndidi (No 40) if you’re specifically looking to offer a midfielder to get back a forward. I’m really far down on them in part because they are, at best, the 3rd and 4th options for their club at their position.

That’s way too much. We speak about Cavani a bit on this week’s Bang Average but OGS has to give him more minutes. That team lacks a cutting edge and as good as Rashford is, Bruno needs a second option ahead of him if they’re going to stay in the race.

Waiting intently for John's response as I just had a trade offer for Saint-Maximin for McNeil

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I would take Saint-Maximin so fast. I mean the gulf is quality is obvious, but ASM is still getting it done in his minutes even without the final product. They’re both basically MID4/5 if OFPL but in any kind of good draft scoring format ASM has the ability to be a top 10 MID any given week which Dwight McNeil does not. Picking between dudes named Dwight and Allen wasn’t how I thought I’d spend my FPL season but here we are

What do you think about Mcneil, Wood and burnley assets in general?

Expand full comment
John Wallin's avatar

I hate Wood very much. I have him ranked 41st. As a forward. It’s like the old (very old) SportsCenter commercial where they tell Evander Hollifield he’s the fifth best boxer and he says “In the World?!?!” And the response is “In Georgia.” This team creates no chances. They’re 19th in shot creating actions, near the bottom in xG and if he plays 3420 he’ll be lucky to score 10 goals.

McNeil is suffering this year because all the other teams in the league have shifted their play to account for the fact that there isn’t a second option there. I’m more hopeful for him but not much. He’s 30th and that’s mostly because of his regular minutes.
